In a world increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability, measuring and reducing the carbon footprint has become an essential commitment for companies. At Smart Materials 3D, we are proud to announce that we have obtained the Calculation seal from MITECO, an official recognition from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, which certifies our work in measuring and controlling our greenhouse gas emissions.
What is the carbon footprint?
The carbon footprint of an organization is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted, directly or indirectly, due to its activity. Its calculation is based on the following formula:
Carbon footprint = Activity Data x Emission Factor
Where:
- Activity Data: measures the level of consumption of an emission source, such as the use of electricity, fossil fuels, or subcontracted services.
- Emission Factor: expresses the amount of CO2 equivalent emitted per unit of activity.
The calculation of the carbon footprint is carried out following recognized methodologies such as UNE-ISO 14064 or the GHG Protocol, allowing a precise evaluation of the environmental impact of a company.
How does the carbon footprint affect Smart Materials 3D?
As a company dedicated to the manufacture of filaments and pellets for 3D printing, our industrial activity entails significant energy consumption. To evaluate our environmental impact, we have conducted a detailed analysis considering the following scopes:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions derived from fuel consumption in our facilities and vehicles.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from electricity consumption in our operations.
- Scope 3: Other indirect emissions, such as the transportation of raw materials, business travel, and waste management.
Thanks to this analysis, we have identified areas where we can improve our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon emissions.
The levels of the MITECO seal: "Calculate, Reduce, Compensate"
The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has developed a carbon footprint certification system based on three levels:
- Calculate: Awarded to organizations that have measured and recorded their carbon footprint, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and environmental management. Smart Materials 3D has reached this level, establishing the basis for future improvements in emission reduction.
- Reduce: Granted to companies that, after calculating their carbon footprint, implement effective measures to reduce their emissions and can demonstrate a decrease in their comparative records.
- Compensate: This level is awarded to organizations that, in addition to calculating and reducing their carbon footprint, compensate for their remaining emissions through CO2 absorption projects, such as reforestation or carbon capture initiatives.
These levels allow companies to progress in their environmental commitment, promoting concrete actions to minimize their climate impact.
Commitment to reduction and sustainability
Obtaining the Calculation seal from MITECO is just the first step on our path to more sustainable production. Now, we focus on reducing our carbon footprint through various strategies, such as:
- Optimization of energy consumption in our facilities.
- Use of renewable energies to minimize the environmental impact of the electricity used.
- Improvements in transportation and logistics efficiency to reduce indirect emissions.
- Implementation of circular economy practices, promoting recycling and responsible use of resources.
We are part of a more sustainable future
We are proud to be one of the more than 1,300 Spanish SMEs that have decided to take a step forward in the fight against climate change. Obtaining the Calculation seal from MITECO reinforces our commitment to sustainability and drives us to continue innovating to minimize our environmental impact.
At Smart Materials 3D, we continue to move towards a greener and more responsible future. Our goal is to continue developing solutions that not only offer quality and innovation but also contribute to the preservation of the planet for future generations.
Be Smart!
