The Wild Boar of Despeaperros has a long history. It was discovered in Santa Elena, Jaen, in the Collado de los Jardines, one of the most revered sanctuaries in Spain. The Iberians believed that this figure provided protection, which is likely used for religious purposes.

Being a 100% Jaen company, Smart Materials 3D has created a replica of this ancestor using digital modeling, starting with a 3D scan of the original Ibero model.

The design was set up to print in three pieces, the largest of which was the stone base with a portion of the legs and two pieces of the boar's body cut in half. This reduced the need for printing supports.

Once the STL was prepared, it was decided to print it with Smartfil® EP, thanks to its ease of machining with sandpaper, which makes it ideal for this type of work. Following are the post-processing steps:

1) After printing, the machining began by hand and the gluing between the different parts with universal glue, based on polyvinyl acetate.

2) To ensure that the subsequent coats of paint adhere better, a first coat of gray primer was applied after it had dried.

3) For the base, a stone effect spray was applied and the hollows of the stone were painted with toasted shadow colour.

4) Acrylic paint was used to paint the boar. To replicate the look of rust, a first layer of green paint was applied over a light layer of white paint.

5) After the first coat, mixed bronze and gold colors were applied.

6) After the first two steps, a sponge was used to apply burnt shadow color washes to give it the dirty effect.

7) Finally, a layer of white with green to give the aged effect.

8) So that all the painting remains protected, a layer of matte varnish was applied that gives realism to the aged metal and protection against scratches and chipping.

And so finally this piece remains, the wild boar from Despeñaperros, a replica of the original bronze piece, once again demonstrating that quality materials and 3D printing technology are incredibly versatile, that even art that is thousands of years old can be replicated with the technologies of our era.
