RESINS DESIGNED WITH SPECIFIC TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS TO ACHIEVE A HIGH LEVEL OF PRECISION AND QUALITY IN 3D PRINTING

Resin is a favorite material for engineers, designers, artists, and printing enthusiasts because it can be used to produce 3D high-quality objects that are difficult to make with filament-based fused deposition modeling (FDM) printers, even though it is a material that has been around for decades.

Indeed, resins are photopolymers, a chemical substance composed of monomers (which form polymers), oligomers and additives, this liquid material is sensitive to light and changes its physical or chemical properties when exposed to a light source, usually ultraviolet light, the resin primarily uses LED/LCD and DLP technologies, unlike the thermoplastics used in fused deposition modeling (FDM), photopolymers are thermosetting, meaning that while the material gets stronger as it is heated, It cannot be remelted after being exposed to ultraviolet radiation to cure.

At Smart Materials 3D we are clear that resins are an important part of materials research within 3D printing and are ideal for quickly producing parts with a high level of precision; In the market there are multiple types of resin, each one designed for a specific application, we can find:

• STANDARD RESIN, which provide highly precise characteristics and a smooth surface finish, suitable for generic or conventional applications. Its high quality and dimensional stability make it suitable for the manufacture of prototypes, however, due to its certain fragility, it is not suitable for applications in which hardness is a determining factor.

• On the other hand, CRYSTAL IMPACT RESIN, if it is designed to satisfy the condition of high hardness and durability, designed for functional prototypes and mechanical parts with low friction and low wear, as well as for pressure assembly systems, also thanks to its low moisture absorption and weather resistance is indicated for outdoor use.

• CRYSTAL FLEX RESIN is a very innovative material, due to its flexible capacity, with a soft rubber sensation, soft rubber-like feel, it can be compressed and bent, it is translucent with low hardness (63 Shore A) and high capacity for stretching and elongation, which makes it a good choice for squeeze models, wearable prototypes, grips, and handles, as well as fashion and jewelry applications.

• For the dental sector, there is HD DENTAL RESIN, which is a high-resolution material specially designed to produce dental modules, thermoforming and aligners, it is characterized by being opaque and completely matte, which provides a high definition to the piece. by accentuating its depth.

• CASTABLE RESIN, which produces delicate patterns for investment casting and achieves details of the highest precision and accuracy in micrometric designs, is a profitable alternative in the jewelry sector.

A mask, gloves, and protective gear should always be used when handling any 3D printing resins. Since resins emit harmful fumes, sufficient ventilation is also necessary before, during, and after post-processing each component; you can learn more about post-processing here.

Thanks to the continuous advances in the field of photopolymer resins, the future of these materials is certainly promising, Smart Materials 3D continues to develop innovative materials within the area of photopolymer materials, so we can only hope for more applications and future use cases.
